A Dictionary in Every Home
It occurred to us here at Family-to-Family that many of the families we serve don’t have a simple dictionary in their homes. Or other kinds of reference or self-help books.
We hope to change that with our “Dictionary in Every Home Campaign”… a monthly donation program to help families living in poverty obtain books like dictionaries, cookbooks, home repair and first aid guides.
We’re asking our friends and sponsors to consider sending one gently used or new book in each month’s category…. a sort of ‘Book of the Month Club’ for our sponsored families. Illustrated books are best.
You can send your book along with your monthly drive item to your sponsored family, or, if you don’t sponsor a family, you can send it directly to any one of our Community Partners, who will distribute them to families in need.
SEPTEMBER – DICTIONARY (for adults or children)
OCTOBER – FAMILY MEDICAL GUIDE
NOVEMBER – HEALTHY COOKBOOK (simple recipes, with easy to find ingredients)
DECEMBER – FAMILY ARTS & CRAFTS PROJECTS
JANUARY – HOME REPAIR, HOW TO/FIX-IT GUIDE
FEBRUARY – EXERCISE BOOK (low-impact: stretching, yoga, pilates, strength training)
MARCH – SMALL CONTAINER GARDENING BOOK (growing lettuce, tomato plants, etc. indoors)
APRIL – SEWING OR KNITTING GUIDE
MAY – OUTDOOR VEGETABLE GARDENING MANUAL
JUNE – COOKBOOK (focusing on vegetables)
JULY – AUTO REPAIR BOOK
AUGUST – WORLD ATLAS/MAPS
In addition to helping our sponsored families expand their knowledge and abilities with these books, we also hope to engage them with books in general ….anticipating that those who are not already active readers might find that these non-fiction, interest-specific books provide them with a gateway into reading.
