‘Comforts of Home’ Welcome Home Boxes
Welcome Hurricane Sandy Families Home
with a ‘Comforts of Home’ Grocery Box Filled with Food Essentials
Hard to believe, but it’s been more than seven months since Hurricane Sandy devastated the New York area. For many of the hardest hit families, the process of recovery has been painfully slow, as resources for rebuilding and replacing lost items are severely limited… or non-existent.
It occurred to us here at Family-to-Family that as these mothers and fathers struggle to put the broken pieces of their lives back together, we can make a meaningful difference…by helping to bring the aromas and tastes and feelings of “home” back into their lives.
Working with Peapod, the online grocery delivery service, which generously matched the first 200 purchased boxes, we’ve put together ‘Comforts of Home’ Welcome Home boxes to help restock cupboards with the basics.
Boxes (or bags) include flour, sugar, onions, potatoes, olive oil, pancake mix, oatmeal, canned tomatoes, soup, bread crumbs, peanut butter and jelly, cooking spray, black beans, kidney beans, rice, pasta, macaroni and cheese, ketchup and mustard. These everyday items are especially expensive to replace when literally EVERYTHING needs replacing.
Helping Struggling Families Still Living in Hotel Rooms
We’re also providing boxes of ready-to-eat (pop-top, microwaveable) foods to hundreds of displaced families who are still living in NYC area hotels. These families are facing so many difficulties; not only did they lose their home (most were in apartments), but they are also fighting poverty, and are threatened with eviction from the hotels at the end of this month (May). Many who may be evicted still have no affordable home to move back to, so they face the prospect of moving their family to a homeless shelter.
Join us and donate a ‘Comforts of Home’ Welcome Home box for a hurricane family in need (or donate boxes for several families), and the
NYC chapter of WGIRLS, INC will match your donation, box for box.
- Select a quantity of boxes to donate.
- Then click on the link to donate grocery box(es) ($62 each) to a Hurricane Sandy family or families that have been identified as being in need.
- We’ll call in the order, and Peapod will pack and deliver the box(es) (or bags) to your Sandy family or families free of charge.
Want to do more? Add a “Clean-Up” Box to your donation for the family you’re helping, filled with everything from laundry detergent to bathroom and kitchen cleaning supplies. (When you order a Welcome Home grocery box you’ll be given the option to add a “Cleanup” box.)

Family-to-Family, Inc. is a not-for-profit company organized and existing under the laws of the State of New York. Given the dire circumstances created by Hurricane Sandy, Family-to-Family has been working with, and relying upon, a number of on the ground, grassroots, community organizers, community volunteers, and community leaders (e.g. school principals, local government officials, neighborhood groups) in areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. These community leaders and organizers have provided Family-to-Family with the names of families who have sought their assistance. Family-to-Family has established this forum for evacuees to communicate their needs. Because of the exigent circumstances surrounding this disaster, Family-to-Family has not performed the in-depth screening that it customarily performs to determine eligibility for aid. Accordingly, Family-to-Family makes no representations and assumes no liability regarding the actual needs of the requests made through this forum, and cannot reimburse donors for any donations made to a family that misrepresents itself. Family-to-Family continues to act on good faith that all of the names provided to us represent families who do require the type of support we offer. In the event Family-to-Family learns of any malfeasance or fraud, we will provide sending families with this information and will assist them in connecting with another family truly in need.
